American doctors warn: teething necklaces and bracelets are dangerous

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns parents that teething necklaces can become dangerous and cause strangulation or suffocation.

According to the FDA, parents choose all kinds of alternatives to alleviate the discomfort that teething causes in their babies and that according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) can include mild irritability, low fever, drooling and the need to chew something hard.

What they often do not know, warns this American administration, is that products such as prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medications, homeopathic medications or teething jewelry can be dangerous and cause serious injury or even death.

What risks do teething jewelry have?

We talked a long time ago about the dangers of amber necklaces and that their sale was even banned to relieve teething problems in children under three years old.

Now the FDA extends the warning to all types of accounts, made of wood, marble or silicone.

And that there are serious risks associated with the use of marketed jewelry to relieve the pain of teething: suffocation, strangulation, mouth lesions and infections.

And to this we must add possible lesions in the mouth or infection, if any piece of these necklaces or bracelets irritate or pierce the gums of the child.

The FDA has even produced more explicit videos about the risks of these products, which are also not effective.

Teething creams and gels are also not safe.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns that topical medications to treat teething pain in children, such as creams and gels, offer little or no benefit, and are associated with serious risks.

In addition, the use of benzocaine gels are little or not effective, since they are removed from the baby's mouth in a matter of minutes, according to the FDA.

But in addition, explains the American regulatory body, these gels, as well as aerosols, ointments and pills for gum pain can lead to a serious, and sometimes fatal, condition called methemoglobinemia, which causes it to significantly reduce the ability to transport oxygen from red blood cells

What can we relieve your discomfort from teething?

The FDA, like the AAP, recommends gently rubbing or massaging the child's gums with a clean finger if they are swollen and tender.

Pediatricians also ensure that hard rubber chewing teething rings are effective, as long as they are free of Bisphenol. Make sure that it is not frozen, because if it is too hard, it can damage the child's gums. Further, "the parents must supervise that the baby does not accidentally choke on the teething ring", ends by advising the Food and Drug Administration of the United States.
