European guide for families on child health and the environment

This afternoon the presentation of the guide takes place in Barcelona “Child Health and Environment: a lifelong relationship”, a work that aims to raise awareness among families about respect for the environment and its relationship with health and offer advice to act in this regard.

This is the first work in Europe on this theme aimed at fathers and mothers and based on results of scientific research, commissioned by the Roger Torné Foundation to scientists from CREAL (Center for Research in Environmental Epidemiology).

The book is a work with two distinct parts. The first part gathers Ten recommendations for fathers and mothers who want to prevent their children's health from environmental factors, also in the prenatal stage.

These are ten basic points, the advice to families to make decisions of daily life that can have an impact on the health of their children:

  • Health begins before birth. Exposure to tobacco and alcohol during pregnancy carries postnatal risks that are sometimes maintained throughout life.

  • Breastfeeding: Health for life. Following the recommendations of the WHO and with studies that demonstrate the short, medium and long term benefits of breastfeeding.

  • Clean air in homes benefits children's respiratory health. With not insignificant data that more than 20% of households have tobacco smoke which leads to an increase in the frequency of respiratory infections and also a greater probability that the child is a smoker when he is an adult.

  • Clean air in the street. Traffic and its relationship with respiratory pathology.

  • One hour of physical activity every day. Recommendation that does not follow half of the children of our country.

  • Five a day Pieces of fruit and vegetables as part of a healthy diet that prevents allergies in children and cardiovascular diseases in the elderly.

  • Water or milk, please! As necessary and recommended drinks in childhood, banishing sugary drinks with low nutrient content.

  • Less than two hours in front of the screen. Both to avoid sedentary lifestyle and to promote good psychological health.

  • Mobile phones. The possible repercussions of radiation emitted by mobile phones on health are being studied. Some countries have developed regulations that especially protect children against these potential effects.

  • Rest and relaxation. The need for rest and respect the hours of sleep.

The second part of the guide contains a series of articles by professionals from different fields that provide opinions and a transversal vision of the relationship between child health and the environment.

The Roger Torné Foundation is a non-profit organization that focuses its activity on children's respiratory health and its impact on environmental factors, and has decided to present the guide on this special date, World Asthma Day. This activity will take place at 7:00 p.m. at CosmoCaixa Barcelona with the assistance of various experts in the field.

As we see, these are topics that we often discuss in the blog, since they are closely linked to the health of our children. That's why I think this guide “Child Health and Environment: a lifelong relationship” It can become an essential reading for families concerned with these issues.
